March 2019

The U.S. Senate has confirmed former Jones Day partner Chad Readler and former associate Eric E. Murphy as judges to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Messrs. Readler and Murphy were both previously based in Jones Day's Columbus Office.

"We're very proud of the appointments of Chad and Eric to these seats on the Sixth Circuit bench," says Beth Heifetz, Practice Leader of Jones Day's Issues & Appeals Practice. "We wish them the best as they pursue these exciting next chapters in their careers."

"During their time with us, Chad and Eric displayed outstanding aptitude for complex litigation and effective navigation of the courts," added Elizabeth Kessler, Partner-in-Charge of the Firm's Columbus Office. "Their in-depth knowledge will serve them well in the future and reflects the commitment to excellence we strive for in the Columbus Office and the Firm at large."

While at Jones Day, Mr. Readler litigated complex civil, criminal, and appellate disputes, focusing on matters involving class actions, product liability, punitive damages, fraud, and constitutional law. He successfully argued before the United States Supreme Court, the Ohio Supreme Court, and other appellate courts.

Mr. Readler has spoken frequently at numerous professional events on business-related legal developments as well as appellate advocacy, including at the biannual Sixth Circuit conference. He has also served as a law clerk for the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

During his tenure at Jones Day, Mr. Murphy concentrated on complex trial and appellate litigation, and argued before the Second, Fourth, and Sixth Circuit Courts of Appeals and drafted briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court and numerous appellate courts.

Mr. Murphy was a law clerk for former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and clerked for the Court of Appeals. He also served as state solicitor under Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, when Mr. DeWine was the state's attorney general.

This marks the most recent confirmation of Jones Day lawyers to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Former partner Jeffrey S. Sutton, also previously of the firm's Columbus Office, was appointed to the court in 2003.
