Rodrigo Gómez Ballina named Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's Mexico City Office

Rodrigo Gómez Ballina has been appointed the new Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's Mexico City Office.

Mr. Gómez Ballina, a partner in the Firm's Tax Practice, has more than 23 years of experience advising on all aspects of Mexican federal and international taxation for M&A transactions, restructurings, and intellectual property licensing. He also advises clients in defending tax disputes, including tax audits, appeals, and settlements. Several of the cases he has handled constituted case law issued by the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice.

In recent years, Mr. Gómez Ballina has advised NII Holdings on all Mexican tax aspects of its sale of its Mexican operations managed by its indirect subsidiary, Nextel de Mexico, S.A. de C.V., to AT&T for $1.875 billion; the Mexican tax-free restructuring prior to the closing of the sale of Vallen Distribution by Sonepar to Nautic Partners; and the Mexican portion of the sale of Avient Corporation's distribution business for $950 million. Currently, he is working on a Mexican tax-free restructuring of the Mexican group of a U.S. public company valued at $1.2 billion.

Mr. Gómez Ballina succeeds Manuel Romano, who served as Partner-in-Charge of the Mexico City Office for the past seven years. Mr. Romano will continue to serve clients as a partner in the Firm's Financial Markets Practice.

"Rodrigo has established himself as a highly respected lawyer at Jones Day and he is well-regarded by clients involved in significant cross-border taxation matters, and also clients in private equity, sovereign investors, and funds looking to structure their investments in the most tax-efficient manner," said Luis Riesgo, the Firm's Partner-in-Charge of Spain/Latin America. "As clients reassess their supply chains, we project that this will be a key area of growth, as reshoring supply chains are likely to result in new plants and facilities in Mexico, and Rodrigo’s experience is core to this multipractice effort. He also has proven himself to be a true catalyst in a variety of leadership roles in our Mexico City Office, and he will continue building on the great work of Manuel Romano.”

Mr. Gómez Ballina was recently recognized by Best Lawyers in Mexico™, and has been recognized for multiple years in The Legal 500 Latin America and Chambers Latin America. He is a member of the International Fiscal Association and of the American Chamber of Commerce and has been involved with their fiscal commission.
