Jones Day’s Michael Gray named a 2017 Law360 MVP in Employment

December 2017

Michael Gray, co-leader of the Firm’s Labor & Employment Practice, has been named a 2017 "MVP" in the Employment category by the legal publication Law360. The MVP awards honor elite attorneys for their successes in high-stakes litigation, significant deals or complex global matters in the previous year.

Law360 recognized a number of Mr. Gray’s wins this past year, including first defeating class certification and then prevailing in a two-week wage-hour bench trial in California state court under the Private Attorneys General Act on behalf of McDonald's, winning summary judgment and class certification in a joint employer wage-hour class action in federal court in the Northern District of California, representing Rotadyne in returning its stolen trade secrets and obtaining damages in a restrictive covenant enforcement action in Illinois, and defeating sexual discrimination and retaliation claims for Verizon Wireless.

In the Law360 profile, Mr. Gray indicated, "the intellectual process of boiling a case down to its essence and ‘trying to find a creative end to a case as quickly as possible’ is the element he most enjoys with any new case he takes on." He went on to say, "Creativity is critical to what we do. . . Creatively trying to get to exactly where the problem is is the most efficient way to provide legal services. . ." The article noted Mr. Gray’s creative approach to litigation, which "can include, for example, changing up the traditional format for the way cases like class actions proceed and convincing an open-minded judge to take a less traditional approach to a case and hear a particular legal issue sooner than he or she otherwise might." Mr. Gray further described his trial win as "one of the most challenging things I ever had to accomplish. There were novel and creative legal issues and it was hard every day. You had to bring your A-game."
