The United States Senate confirmed by unanimous consent Jones Day partner Justin Herdman as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. Mr. Herdman is based in the Firm's Cleveland Office and part of its Investigations & White Collar Defense Practice. He was nominated for the U.S. Attorney post by President Trump in June of this year.
"We are extraordinarily proud of Justin and believe he will make an outstanding prosecutor," said Heather Lennox, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's Cleveland Office. "Through his deep experience, determined and independent nature, excellent judgment, and deep intellect, the men and women of the U.S. Attorneys Office have a terrific and steadfast leader, and the citizens of Ohio's Northern District have gained an exemplar top law enforcement official."
Mr. Herdman joined Jones Day from his former role as Assistant U.S. Attorney and Deputy Chief of the National Security, Human Rights, and Organized Crime Unit in the Northern District of Ohio. In that unit he was responsible for investigating and prosecuting national security crimes arising in or out of activities in northern Ohio. He is perhaps best known for his work in terrorism cases, including the successful trial and appeal of what has been called “the first federal trial of a home grown terror cell” in the United States, as well as part of the prosecution team of five individuals convicted of attempting to use explosives on a Cleveland-area bridge.
Before returning home to the Cleveland area in 2005, Mr. Herdman was an Assistant District Attorney in New York City, working for the legendary District Attorney for the borough of Manhattan, Robert M. Morgenthau, where Mr. Herdman prosecuted a wide range of violent crime and identity theft cases.
He serves as a Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force Reserve and is a former intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve. He earned his B.A. from Ohio University, his M.Phil. from the University of Glasgow, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School. In 2014, Mr. Herdman received the Judge Richard M. Markus Adjunct Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching from Case Western Reserve University School of Law.
