Jones Day names winner of 11th Professor Illescas award

María Serna Díez de Revenga is the winner of the XI Professor Illescas-Jones Day award for academic excellence in the field of European Union Law. Launched in 2012 for students at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid who are working toward a Master's Degree in EU Law, the award was created to recognize talent among students with international interests and to advance their professional training.

"One of Jones Day's priorities in Spain is the identification and promotion of outstanding legal talent among students," said Marta Delgado, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's Madrid Office and a member of the Academic Council of the Master's program. "The Master's program in European Union Law undoubtedly contributes to the training of future professionals who can develop their careers in a global environment and from a holistic perspective."

Ms. Serna Díez de Revenga, the 11th winner to receive this award since its inception, was recognized at a ceremony on 16 June. In addition, Alejandro Pernía Jaén was recognized with an accésit (runner-up) award for the exceptional quality of his work. He is also is a student at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid working toward a Master's Degree in EU Law.

The award is open each year to students of the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid Master's program with an evaluation equal to or higher than 8/10. The selected candidates must solve a case study consisting of a topical issue of EU Economic Law and make a dissertation in English before the judges. The proposals are judged on their technical quality, originality, practical approach, depth of knowledge of the areas of EU law addressed, and the quality of the oral presentation.

The judges included:

  • Mr. Rafael Illescas, Professor of Commercial Law (retired), Universidad Carlos III in Madrid
  • Ms. Rosario Silva, former Vice-President of the Court of Justice of the European Union and member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation
  • Mr. Amadeo Petitbó, Professor of Applied Economics (retired), Universidad Complutense in Madrid
  • Mr. Ricardo Alonso, Professor of Commercial Law, Universidad Autónoma in Madrid
  • Mr. Carlos Moreiro, Professor of International Law and current Director of the Master’s Degree in European Law, Universidad Carlos III in Madrid

The Master's Degree in EU Law at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid promotes the training of specialists in law within the EU environment. Taught mostly in English, the students are evaluated through the resolution of practical cases. The aim is to bring students into contact with the practice of EU Law and provide them with the necessary tools to resolve complex issues.
